Eligibility Factors

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required. Demonstrated experience as a cook in an institutional setting is preferred. Experience performing the essential functions of the position is desirable.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare foods for tray line
  • Perform tray line activities
  • Obtain/stage food supplies for next meal
  • Ensure meals served are appetizing in appearance
  • Ensure meals served conform to portion control standards
  • Maintain food storage area
  • Prepare food
  • Cover and label food
  • Ensure proper temperatures are maintained throughout food preparation and serving
  • Store leftover food
  • Check and inspect food products/supplies as delivered
  • Store food and supplies
  • Prepare food to meet menus
  • Recognize and respond to dietary emergencies
  • Set up food services production line
  • Prepare food by recipes
  • Monitor food for temperature, portion control, palatability, and attractiveness
  • Sample prepared food
  • Cook foodstuffs according to menus, special dietary or nutritional restrictions, or numbers of portions to be served
  • Clean, cut, and cook meat, fish, or poultry
  • Bake breads, rolls, and other pastries
  • Prepare a variety of foods, such as meats, vegetables, desserts
  • Take and record temperature of food and food storage areas
  • Wash, peel, and cut various foods, such as fruits and vegetables
  • Weigh or measure ingredients
  • Clean work tables, meat blocks, refrigerator/freezer
  • Sweep/dust floors
  • Keep work area clean and organized
  • Clean equipment
  • Clean floors
  • Maintain/use chemicals safely
  • Mop floors
  • Report hazardous conditions/equipment to supervisor
  • Report spills
  • Identify and report equipment malfunction
